Moving - The Ultimate Checklist

A bulleted checklist for home buyers and sellers.
1 Month Before Closing
- Hire a Mover (Or coordinate with friends/family)
- Purchase boxes and packing tape.
- Begin cleaning out and boxing up closets, attics, and garage.
- Donate or Trash items that aren't worth moving.
2 Weeks Before Moving
- Submit a postal change of address form https://moversguide.usps.com/mgo/disclaimer
- Empty fuel from your lawnmower, power tools, etc.
- Notify your internet, cable, TV, security, pest control, cleaning, lawn maintenance and any other services your receive. Find our complete moving notification list blog post.
- Create room-by-room packing calendar to track progress.
- Assemble a folder of important info about the home for the next owner (a kitchen drawer is a great place for them to find it).
- Make sure all necessary repairs are completed.
1-5 Days Before Moving
- Defrost your freezer and empty ice maker or ice cube trays
- Clean the refrigerator, stovetop, and oven.
- Disconnect and drain all appliances that are moving with you.
- Have the payment for the movers ready.
- Confirm travel arrangements.
- Confirm arrival time of movers/pickup time of rental truck.
- Gather and clean outdoor/patio furniture.
- Return cable box, modem, if necessary.
- Pack suitcase of each family member with clothes and toiletries to get through the first three days.
- Use towels, tshirts, and pillows for padding around breakables to save space.
- Backup all computers, tablets, phones, and other devices.
Moving Day
- Double-check that your cupboards, closets, dishwasher and other appliances are empty.
- Give movers a tour and any specific instructions on what to move or not move.
- Take note of utility meter readings (snap pic on phone).
- Take a final walk-through fo the home to make sure no items are left behind (don't forget closets and built-ins).
- Leave a note with your new address in the house so new owners know where to forward mail.
In Your New Home
- Make sure rooms and surfaces are clean and everything is working properly.
- Take note of the new home's utility meter readings (take pic with phone).
- Check around the property to ensure that the previous owners did not leave anything behind.
- Unpack and begin to organize your new home.
- Confirm your new address (see moving notification list linked above).
